Review by Teresa Mashburn (date: 21-Jun-2010)
Subject: Father Day's Cookout At Heritage Campground
Comment: Our family went to great extend to plan a cookout at Heritage Campground for Father's Day. This cookout turned out to be a disaster. Upon arrival we discovered we had to carry all of our items from the parking lot. When we could have easily drove to the area and dropped our items off and then returned cars to the parking lot. The owner went on to explain to me that they could not allow people to drive through the campground area because they could not make people especially hispanics understand to drive slow. We had two of our teenagers that went to get a ball to play basketball out in the water, they were given a basketball to play ball where there was a bird's nest on the basketball pole by one of the owners and only minutes later kicked out because they were accused of using profanity and harassing the the bird's nest. I do not think they should have ever been given the basketball if harassing the birds was going to be an issue. The teenagers said they were not using profanity. When the owner addressed us about the teenagers she was told that the teenagers would be leaving. the parent of one of the teenagers took the teenagers and left at this point. One of the teenagers come with a Hispanic man who was part of our family and two of his relatives were in a vehicle behind them. The two hispanic men were told that this was a family campground and they didn't allow singles. However, they chose to take their money and let them in anyway. I am an American woman. I had been to Heritage earlier in the week alone and came alone yesterday and no one ever mentioned anything to me about it being a family campground and no singles were allowed. There was also two other American females that arrived alone yesterday morning and the issue of being single was never mention to them either. Soon after our teenagers had left the campground we had a guy that came to our picnic area who said they had a report from someone saying we had a keg of beer at the area. I told him we did not have a keg. At this point we as a group decided that we were being treated disrespectful and we were not going to stay somewhere that we felt we were not wanted. We packed our items and asked to get a refund and were told refunds were not given. When one of our party members addressed the owner about being accused of having a keg when we did not she then come back with the remark that she could check our coolers. She was told if she wanted to check our coolers she could. She did not persue this and said if we didn't leave and wanted to cause trouble she would call 911. Our group left Heritage because our goal was not to create problems. We went to have a cookout and enjoy a day with the Fathers in our family. I feel strongly that this was a prejudice thing because everything was going well until we had family members who are hispanics arrive on the scene, then it felt like the owners were looking for things to kick us out about. It saddens me to think that there are people out there that wants to treat people with such disregards because of their race. I know in my heart that God knows the truth about this situation and that is all that matters.
